Wonderfully ripe and perfumed, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, sweet cherry, thyme, toasted nut and subtle game characters with a floral overtone. It’s sumptuous and silky on the palate, delivering terrific fruit power together with silky texture, offering fabulous drinking. A blend of Shiraz (2004 planting), Grenache (1917) & Mataro (1898).
La Madonna is crafted from a blend of rich varietal Shiraz, perfumed Grenache and savoury, textural Mataro. The blend inspired by Mum forming the foundation for this vibrant, structured and complex wine.
The fruit is sourced from our Estate vineyards at Lyndoch and Rowland Flat in the Southern Barossa Valley. The Shiraz comes from our Angel’s vineyard which gives plum, dark berry and spice. Whilst the Mataro from the same vineyard planted in 1898 gives savoury, earthy characters. The dark berry, perfumed notes are derived from the Centenarian Grenache which is planted next to the winery and the Church at Rowland Flat in 1917.
Angela, Victoria, John Koch and Peter (Victoria’s 6 year old son) hand picked the Old Vine vineyards for this wine. The old vines were crushed and destemmed, hand plunged whilst fermenting. On completion of fermentation the wine was basket pressed and put to barrel.
La Madonna was aged in medium toasted American oak for 8 months as separate parcels of wine. The Shiraz is the dominant varietal in this blend, barrels were carefully selected to blend with the Grenache and Mataro to create this vibrant complex wine. Perfumed and rich, layered with dark berry fruits, spice and savoury tannins.
