Within Lou Miranda Estate vineyards in the Barossa Valley there is a block of bush vine Mataro planted in 1898 which makes the vines 117 years old for the 2015 vintage. From here we source the fruit, its intensely brooding earthy sinewy flavours and tannins and blend with a younger block of Shiraz, which prior to harvest, we cut the canes on the vine with the bunches still attached and allow the fruit to dehydrate ensuring very rich ripe concentrated jammy flavours. The combination creates a very distinctive highly aromatic flavoursome red wine.
The wine experience will be of a complex aroma of ripe dark berries and spice notes with savoury dense chewy satisfying tannins. The blend is of opposites, sweet jammy fruit from the partial bunch drying on the vine 3 -5 days dependant on the weather and temperature of the Shiraz and the abundant pronounced tannins of the Mataro for which the variety in known.
The blend percentage in 2015 is 87% Shiraz and 13% Mataro which has spent 36+ months in predominately seasoned American oak to tame the Mataro tannins and complex the exuberant primary fruit of the Shiraz. The result is a wine that is synergistic and harmonised combining the strength of each variety with the palate having weight, length, structure and rich fruit character combined with oak derived complexity and spice with fully matured tannins adding a savoury textural element.
Lingering coffee charry smokey flavours on the finish ensures this deep dark red with developing brick red hues indicating its maturity has amazing length and persistence.
2,986 bottles only of the 2015 Shiraz Mataro were produced. Please enjoy this limited release wine with truffle pasta or beef wellington. It will pair well with dark chocolate.
