Wine Reviews:
Sam Kim 2020  – 96 points
The powerful aromas of dark fruit, cedar and dark chocolate with nuances of tapenade and clove on the nose, leading to a superbly weighted palate displaying outstanding fruit purity and richness, while properly structured by wonderfully pitched fine tannins. Opulent and hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2036.

Description

Description

Colour: Deep dark red with garnet hues

Aroma: Toasty vanilla notes intwined with brown spices of clove and star anise. Fruit characters of ripe plum, dark berry and black olive make for a complex, multilayered bouquet.

Palate: A full bodied wine with richness and concentration of flavour. The intense fruit sweetness typical of old vine fruit is balanced by oak characters and high extract tannins. The oak delivers persistence of flavour and length with mocha characters adding depth.

Winemaking: The Shiraz is sourced from vines planted in 1907 (Classified Centenarian Vines as per the Barossa Old Vine Charter) from the Estates ‘Winery Church’ block at Rowland Flat, in the Southern Barossa Valley. The vines are dry grown and completely hand tendered. The fruit is assessed for ripeness of sugar and tannin prior to hand picking. The use of small open fermenters allows for gentle maceration. The wine is aged in American oak for 2 and a half years, prior to being assessed, blended and bottled.

Assessment: This is a highly concentrated red wine. The intense flavour is matched by tannin from the fruit and oak maturation adding overall extract and structure of the wine. Big and opulent pair with intensely flavoured dishes, a BBQ meat feast of ribeye, T-bone, fillet steak or cured salami, mettwurst or highly flavoured sausage.
Cellaring With appropriate cellaring and patience 10-15+ years will see the wine mature and evolve giving greater satisfaction. We recommend decanting prior to serving to enhance your enjoyment.
